Hawaii Boy In a Sketchbook Shirt

Hawaii Boy

It has been a long time since Quinn was featured on my blog!!

Hawaii Boy

We recently went on a family trip to Maui, and of COURSE I went to a fabric store there! Only one though- it is a small island and there aren’t many, plus we were super busy exploring hiking and beaching. But the very last day, my sister and I snuck off for a couple hours to get our jollies on at Fabric Mart. This place was awesome, so much stuff, SO much Hawaiian print fabric!! I bought loads.

I figured since Hawaiin shirts are a staple in Quinn’s wardrobe, it would be more than awesome to make him one from fabric that was actually Hawaiian, lol!! Of course, this shirt isn’t typical Hawaiian print.. but I couldn’t say no!! The mix of surfing sand and cars… It was a total no-brainer, I knew that Quinn would adore this fabric and the shirt it would become :)

AGAIN this is the O+S Sketchbook Shirt. This timeĀ I made the size 4. I have sewn this in every size available to me, but this will be my last :( I really adore this pattern, but I DO NOT adore the fact that the sizes are split from 6m-4 then 5-12. At $15.95 per pattern, I would expect to get all the dang sizes. I’m not about to pay $32 for one pattern. Ridiculous.

After all the sketchbook shirts I’ve sewn (here, here, here, here and here), this is actually the VERY FIRST where I took the time to topstitch the collar, crazy! Turns out I do like how it looks! Sometimes not being lazy turns out great :) Probably always, but please don’t tell me that haha!

Oh that poor little babe, he got whacked in the face with our huge heavy wooden swing in our back yard. I think he handled the pain pretty well and I’m super impressed he didn’t have any bruising beyond that cut under his eye!! Millie, on the other hand, has a bit of a black eye right now from banging her knee into her eyeball during gymnastics.. These kids, I swear!

Millie picked out these buttons. I was doubtful, but she has a bit of a strange attachment to buttons (and button aisles- when she was still in diapers she would take off her shoes and poop in the Joann’s button aisle EVERY single time we shopped there, which was a lot LOL!! I guess buttons just relax that girl) so I trusted her judgement! This time, luckily, we didn’t have to leave the house. I have a jar full of old buttons that I bought from a huge Ebay lot and I had her go through it and pick out 5 of the same buttons that she thought went with the shirt well :) Now that I see them on, I’m a fan!

Hawaii Boy

I LOVE this picture, he was totally pouting and whining when I was swinging him, but as soon as Millie started pushing he couldn’t be happier! He sure loves that girl :) Or maybe she just pushes the swing higher and more intense ;)

I’m a little upset that I didn’t take the time to match the pattern to the button placket. After I sewed it all together, I realized how perfect it would have been to have the whole picture across the front. OH WELL! I didn’t really have much option, I used every bit of the fabric I bought- I got one yard and as much as I loved being at Fabric Mart, I was skimped a few inches of it with crooked cutting :/ I’m thinking that may have happened with the other cuts of fabric I bought too.

Hawaii Boy

I am honestly amazed at how much I have to say about a shirt that I have now sewn SIX TIMES!! That must be some sort of record for me!! But I think I was just having fun making somethingĀ for Quinn again :) And I’ve been getting excited about sewing again, which is awesome because I always feel SO MUCH BETTER when I take the time to sew. I don’t know why I was so lazy about it the past few months!! I’ll blame it on those crazy pregnancy hormones ;)

Hawaii Boy

I really need to get started making things for this new baby to wear, but all the little dresses and outfits I love start at 12 months or even 18 months with the sizing.. Does anyone know of any adorable baby dress pattern that starts at 3 or 6 months?

  1. The geranium dress by madebyrae comes in a 0-3 month size- and the pattern for that size (only) is free! I just finished one along with a matching diaper cover (another free pattern, by seekatesew) for a baby gift- quick and cute!

    1. OMG YES!! I forgot all about the geranium dress!! I’m totally printing it out today, and I’ll check out that diaper cover too- Thank you SO MUCH for the suggestion!! And they’re free too! I can’t lose! :D

  2. You know, I have never sewn that pattern, but it looks perfect! I bet my son would really like it in the right fabric! I just may have to try that!!! And now I am totally kicking myself for not making it to the fabric shop last summer in Hawaii :).

  3. Your son looks so happy with his new shirt! That fabric is great, I know my son would just love it too! I’ve got the sketchbook shirt pattern but haven’t made it yet – I’ve still got a bit of a mental block abut shirts and trousers and haven’t made any of either, for myself or my son. I’ve just discovered your blog and am enjoying having a wee look through your posts!

    1. You should totally make it!! Start with this pattern, Oliver + S has such great instructions, they really seam to hold your hand through all the steps. After sewing pattern this for Quinn I wasn’t at all scared to sew a button down shirt for my husband! You should try pants for your son before making them for yourself, once you get the technique of the waistband and zip on a mini version, then you can start on the hair pulling event that is trying to fit trousers to an adult body, YIKES! (lol, even though I’ve done it, I’m still a bit timid about making pants for myself)

    1. Hhaha!! I got a sudden burst of energy for a couple weeks and was sewing every day, it must have been my version of nesting!!
But honestly, I’ve been riddled with guilt that I haven’t sewn anything from the bunch of maternity patterns you sent me!! I had one dress pattern set aside to make, but then couldn’t figure out WHERE I set it aside, but I just found it this weekend- and I only have 1 more month of pregnancy to go!! (maybe- I had like a million contractions yesterday :| ) I still may sew it and use it for like a night gown/ loose casual post maternity dress :)
