Woohoo! I’m pretty excited to be on the Compagnie M Lotta Skirt tour! When Marte selected me to be a tester for her skirt, I was over the moon! I loved being a part of the Mara action tour and was excited to work with her. I just love the gathers and the cute pocket detail with the buttons.
I have to admit, I had this fabric hoarded for quite a while. It is a walk in the woods by Aneela Hoey for Moda fabrics. Apparently it is out of print since I was holding on to it for so long! I was SUPER excited when I bought it but could never figure out what to sew with it. Nothing seamed right or perfect enough.. Until the Lotta skirt! I knew I was taking a risk cutting into this while the pattern was still at its testing stage, but having sewn Compagnie M before, I kind of knew Marte was very detail oriented and wouldn’t really have to worry about any weirdness in the pattern pieces. And thank goodness my faith panned out because this skirt fits Millie PERFECTLY!!
I wanted to keep things simple and have the main fabric be the eye catcher, so I just used a red quilting cotton for the pockets and light blue buttons so they could accent the birds and mushrooms. The pattern gives the option of adding button hole elastic in the back waistband so you could sew a size up and have it last a bit longer. I sewed a size 4 for Millie, she fit within those measurements and I definitely did not need to do that elastic in the back! Seriously, this fits her beyond perfect. I did add 2 inches to the hem, though since she is pretty darn tall. It closes with an invisible zipper (which, I admit, I need a little more practice with) so it is very clean and professional looking.
Millie saw this skirt when it was *almost* finished and was like “Is this for ME?? I LOVE IT!!” That made me really excited since she is usually more of a dress person than a skirt person. She has already worn it 3 times in the couple weeks or so that it’s been sewn, which says a lot since she wears a uniform to school!
As for the construction of the skirt, everything went pretty smoothly. Marte gives a really good way to do even gathers in the instructions, which was kind of like DUH! I don’t know why I never thought to sew them that way!! I always just gather everything and hope for the best.. This method was WAY more geared for perfection :) Everything lined up exactly as it should and everything is explained thoroughly.
Another REALLY awesome thing about this skirt? It comes in women’s sizes too!! After seeing some of the ladies versions on the tour I definitely plan on sewing one up for myself too!! And right now the Lotta Dress is 10% off with coupon codes.. The one for girls (size 1-10) is lotta-girls-10 and the one for women’s (sizes 12-14 yo and 34-46) is lotta-women-teens-10.
